Drinking summer into existence

I don't know about you, but I fucking miss the shit out of summer. I'm not a cold weather girl. My happy place is on the beach, feeling a warm breeze in my hair and sand on my toes. And, of course, my happy place also includes a cold beer (or five). I'm sick and tired of winter and really don't have any time for spring either, so I've decided to simply drink summer into existence.

Usually, my go-to beach beer is Victory Summer Love. It's crisp, slightly bitter, and a little fruity. It's the perfect summer refreshment. Although, man cannot live on Summer Love alone. Sometimes a girl's gotta mix it up.

Last night, I was standing in the sprawling craft beer section at Roger Wilco Pennsauken, trying to decide on a brew for the evening. If you have been to this location, you know that the number of craft beers offered is staggering.

After about 25 minutes of wandering, I stumbled upon Whale Ale from Kona Brewing Company. It was part of the Craft Brew Alliance Explorer variety 12-pack The idea of a wheat pale ale definitely brings thoughts of summer to mind, so I was really hoping this would give me my fix. I've always been a fan of Kona brews, especially the lovely Koko Brown, and they've never let me down.

I opened the bottle and was immediately impressed with the nose. It was bright and citrusy, slightly soapy, with some nice floral notes. I was feeling more Hawaiian already. The taste was right in line with the nose but with just enough hops to cut through the sweetness and add some bitter crispness to the already bright flavors. The foam was soft and not bitter, and the carbonation average to light. It was very drinkable and definitely didn't taste like it's 6% ABV.

In a lot of ways, Whale Ale reminded me a lot of my coveted Summer Love, but it also stood out on its own. It's slightly fruitier and a little less carbonated, and I can definitely see myself stashing a few of these bad boys in my beach cooler this summer. Come on, Memorial Day. Hurry up and get here already!!

Stay drunk, bitches!
